The Biebrza Experiment Station is located in the central part of the Kuwasy peatland , situated in the north-eastern part of the middle basin of the Biebrza river , about 10 kilometers from the border of the Biebrza National Park. It was founded in 1951 with the aim to provide a scientific basis for the complex rural management on peatlands. In the 50's, the Station was one of the most considerable experiment stations in Europe. During the next forty-years period of its history the activities of the Station have been changing. Nowadays it aims at defining the relationship connections between agricultural production and protection of wetlands' natural values.

Research projects undertaken by the station changed recently due to decrease of the interest towards grassland farming. The present research objectives are:

  • optimalization of water management on grasslands, maintaining possible high moisture status,
  • research on the succession processes in grasslands, considering various water and trophic conditions, with special interest to the secondary succession on grasslands abandoned from traditional land use,
  • research on the influence of different forms of farming on avifauna.
